Clinical Rotations
Interns will spend 10 weeks in clinical settings. Generally, the rotation is broken into two-five week segments, clinical I and clinical II. Clinical I settings are regional hospitals in and around the Houston Metro area. Interns will be introduced to the basics: reading charts, screening and assessing patients, writing chart notes, and providing basic patient education. Clinical II is an advanced practice rotation where the skills learned in clinical I will be used to work with more complicated disease states. Interns are expected to complete "staff relief" by the end of the second clinical rotation.
The UHDI has affiliations with many different hospitals and clinics. Interns are encouraged to choose an area of interest for their clinical II rotations. Within the Texas Medical Center (TMC), interns may choose to work at MD Anderson Cancer center, ranked as #1 cancer hospital in the world! The Methodist Hospital is renowned for cardiology and has an outstanding staff of more than 20 dietitians. Ben Taub Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Harris County and is a teaching hospital for many medical disciplines. Outside of the TMC, interns may choose from a variety of large regional hospitals for a well-rounded clinical experience. Many of our interns choose renal dialysis as their clinical II rotation. We are affiliated with Davita Dialysis with locations all around the Houston area. Dialysis offers interns the opportunity to work with complicated metabolic problems that are managed primarily through diet. Dialysis also allows the practitioner an extended opportunity to work one-on-one with patients providing comprehensive education for managing kidney failure.
