Research Rotations

 

Research is an integral part of the nutrition field and all nutrition experts must be proficient in research design, implementation and analysis. UH interns have a number of research settings to choose from to develop skills and expertise in this area.  Interns will spend four weeks gaining expertise in one of the many available opportunities.

 

Baylor College of Medicine*:  Ongoing research in the areas of diabetes and weight management are available in the “Look Ahead” study, a ten year multi-site NIH study on the effects of weight management on the development of long term complications.  Other sites at BCM have ongoing research in pediatric nutrition.

 

Houston Buyers Club : HBC provides nutritional education and affordable nutritional supplements to persons living with HIV/AIDS and chronic illnesses.

 

Laboratory of Integrated Physiology : fully equipped human performance/physiology/biochemistry laboratory capable of performing a wide variety of human performance testing, including exercise testing, muscle strength assessment, motor co-ordination/motor performance testing, learning/memory assessment and biochemical analysis of biological samples.

 

Johnson Space Center:  Bench research on the effects of space travel on nutrient metabolism and excretion.

 

UTMB/NASA:  Ongoing studies into the effects of weightlessness on nutrient metabolism and excretion.

 

Children’s Nutrition Research Center:  Opportunities with a variety of on-going studies in this research facility that is a joint operation between USDA and Texas Children’s Hospital*.

 

UNDO:  The Understanding Neighborhood Determinants of Obesity  (UNDO) Research Team conducts research anchored in an ecological framework that incorporates environmental and individual determinants of physical activity, dietary habits and obesity in populations of color from neighborhoods in Houston and Austin, Texas.

 

Supermarket Savvy:  A subscription based periodical that researches new food items and evaluates them for a target population of RD’s in practice.
